Choosing a New Roof for Your Home

If you are building a new roof or replacing an old one, you have the opportunity to choose from a range of good roofing materials. The type of roofing you decide on will depend on your budget and your house’s style. With an existing home, most often you will replace your roof with the same kind of material. However, there are times when you might consider another type of covering. Here is a rundown of the most commonly available materials for roofing.

Asphalt Shingles

Affordable and easy to install, asphalt is a popular choice for roofs. These shingles are a combination of fiberglass and asphalt. Asphalt shingles can last from between 15 and 30 years. There are basicvarieties or thick, laminated shingles. Laminated shingles cost nearly twice as much as the standard shingle, but some people prefer their texture and appearance.

Wood Shingles

Wood is a good option for some houses. Cedar, redwood and southern pine are used in wood shingles. Some areas restrict the use of wood roofing, however, because of the danger of fires. A wood roof may need to be replaced after about 25 years and will generally cost morethan asphalt.

Metal, Tile and Cement

Metal, tile and cement roofs are durable. However, they can also be expensive and heavy. Aluminum, steel and copper are the most common configurations for metal roofs.Half-cylinder tiles are often used in Spanish or mission architecture. Cement can be manufactured to look like tile.

Slate Tiles

Slate is a natural and attractive roofing material. Slate comes from quarries in Vermont, Pennsylvania and other states. This material is among the most durable, but the cost of slate roofingcan be prohibitively expensive. Like metal, tile and cement, slate is heavy.

Choosing a roofing material is a decision that will affect your home’s appearance and value for years to come. Style, durability, price and building codes are all considerations in making the right choice for your home.
