6 Important Steps to Help Get Your Malibu Home Ready for Summer

Summer is here. While you might be ready to throw your next big summer bash, it is important to ensure that your home is prepared, as well. Cold weather can take a toll on any house. Fortunately, there are some simple steps that you can take to prepare your Malibu home for the hot summer months.

Make Sure That Your Air Conditioning Is Ready for the Heat

Start by doing a thorough inspection of your entire air conditioner system. Checking the filters in your inside unit. If they are dirty or old, change them. Take a look at the outside condenser unit. The fan inside the condenser coil sucks air in through the fins of the unit. This action will suck any nearby debris and dirt into the unit, as well. Therefore, clear any debris and leaves from around it. Change your inside thermostat to the cool setting and test the system. Even if your system is cooling properly, have a professional service your air conditioning system early in the summer season. Having your air conditioning serviced early might help prevent a breakdown in the middle of the summer, when the weather is unbearably hot and the repairs are costly, especially if emergency service is needed. In addition, most central air conditioning warranties require regular service. Not performing basic maintenance of the system may void the warranty.

Install Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans provide comfort, reduce energy costs and improve cooling in the summer. They use only about as much power as a standard 60 watt light bulb. Late spring or early summer is the perfect time to install additional ceiling fans in your home. Almost any room can benefit from a ceiling fan. If you already have ceiling fans, make sure that they are spinning in the right direction. In the summer, ceiling fan blades should turn counter-clockwise to push cool air towards the floor. There is a small reverse switch on the unit’s motor that can be used to change the fan’s direction. Some units that are equipped with a remote control have this function right on the remote.

Prepare Your Grill

Summer is grilling season. With Memorial Day cookouts and summer parties, your grill will likely get plenty of use. It is important to make sure that your grill is ready for all of this action. Start by doing a thorough cleaning. A cleaner grill will provide better performance by allowing increased airflow. If the grill is dirty, energy is absorbed into the debris and reduces the airflow. In addition, burned-on residue creates a fire risk. After cleaning the grill, prepare the propane tank. Inspect the tank and run a leak test. You can do this by coating the valves, hoses and regulator with soapy water. Then turn on the tank. Next, look for bubbles, which indicate a gas leak. If there is a leak, tighten the connections and replace any hoses or tank if needed.

Renew Your Deck

Spending time outdoors on your deck is one of the best ways to enjoy the summer. Unfortunately, rain, snow and ice can take a toll on any wooden deck. The summer months are equally hard on a deck with extreme temperatures and the sun’s damaging rays. In addition, if your Malibu home is on the ocean, your deck is subject to damaging wind and salt. To get the most out of your deck this summer, take these steps to protect it. Start by giving your deck a thorough cleaning with a power washer to remove any debris. Next, coat and waterproof your deck. It is best to hire a professional as this is a labor-intensive job. In addition, professional companies have access to high-quality waterproofing systems that can make your deck look brand-new.
