How to Maintain a Deck and Prevent Wood Damage

Cleaning a wood deck can be a daunting task, but the process can be easy and simple with the appropriate equipment. A pressure washer can help relieve some of the fear and strain that is typically associated with cleaning an outdoor wooded surface.

Select a Cleaning Method
Some homeowners prefer to clean their deck by hand; however, the process is extremely time-consuming. For those who would like to clean their deck by using traditional methods, they can scrub the surface with a firm brush and a solution of oxygen bleach. Alternatively, homeowners can simply and easily clean their deck with a pressure washer, which is a machine that basically does most of the work with minimal assistance from the user.

Preparing the Pressure Washer
In order to prepare for their outdoor project, homeowners should rent a pressure washer from a hardware store. Afterwards, the machine can be filled with the appropriate detergent for wood decks. Because most pressure washers need a constant stream of water to perform optimally, the garden hose should be firmly secured to the hose attachment on the back of the equipment.

Pressure-Washing a Wood Deck
Before cleaning a wood deck, homeowners should remember that a powerful spray will most likely destroy the integrity of the surface. Therefore, it’s a good idea to avoid using a high-powered nozzle for this type of project. According to experts, a 25-degree to 40-degree nozzle is appropriate for pressure-washing a wood deck. After connecting the nozzle to the spray tip, carefully distribute the detergent across the deck. Homeowners should ensure that the nozzle is a safe distance from the deck’s surface so that the pressure of the liquid does not harm the wood.

Successfully Completing the Project
Once the entire deck has been sprayed with the liquid, homeowners should rinse the surface with water until the detergent is removed. Most wood decks will be dry within a couple of days; therefore, homeowners will not have to wait too long before replacing outdoor furniture on the beautiful surface. The wood deck should be free of mold and other harmful components.
