Common Types of Roofing Materials

Many homeowners consider putting in a new roof an unpleasant necessity rather than an exciting project for bettering their place of residence. However, the variety of roofing materials available on the market today allows for more expression than you may think when it comes to installing a roof that works with the overall look of your house.

Composite Shingles

These are the most common type of shingle on the market, and for good reason. They are fairly tough, come in a variety of colors, and are easy to replace if you lose one. Most composite shingles last 20 or 30 years before they need to be replaced, and almost all roofing companies know how to work with them. They also come in a variety of colors and styles so you can match them to your home.

Metal Roofing

Though once strictly the domain of the warehouse and garden shed, metal roofing has successfully made the transition to the family home in recent years. Metal roofs look unique and they are resistant to termites, fire, and many other common calamities that damage roofs made from other materials. However, they tend to be fairly expensive and there are few installers who know how to work with them.

Slate Shingles

Slate shingles are the strongest of all available roofing materials. Roofs made of slate easily hold up for hundreds of years, even in areas where the weather is regularly extreme. The downside of slate is that it is extremely heavy and a strong support system is needed to hold it in place.

Wood Shingles

Wood shingles come in a couple of different varieties. Shingles made from regular wood are attractive and lightweight, but prone to weathering. Though inexpensive and attractive, they may not last as long as other materials. Wood shake shingles are thicker than standard wood and last longer, but they need regular upkeep.

The roof is one of the most important parts of your house. When choosing roofing materials, why not give it the consideration it is due?
