Getting a new roof is an expensive project, so it is no surprise that people want to extend the life of their roof. Here are a few things that you can do to make sure that your roof lasts as long as possible:
- Unclog Gutters
When your gutters get full of leaves and other gunk, water can overflow and actually rot the roof sheathing or rafters.
- Clear Snow
Sometimes ice builds up on a roof and that can cause ice dams, which are thick ridges of ice near the eaves. This ice can tear off shingles and gutters and cause your roof to leak. If you clear the snow after the storm, you have less chance of this damage happening.
- Clear Leaves
If leaves stay on your roof, they can start to decompose and trap moisture and even help weeds to grow. By simply clearing your roof of leaves, you can greatly reduce this risk.
- Clear Moss
Moss growing on a roof can trap water. You can help prevent the growth of moss by using zinc strips.
- Clear Vents
Proper attic ventilation may not seem that important for the life of your roof, but it can really keep your roof young. You have to make sure that there is no dust, dirt or debris in the way of good attic ventilation.
- Trim Trees
Trimming trees to keep branches from hanging over your roof reduces the amount of leaves that will fall and also reduces the likelihood of a branch crashing into your roof.
- Look Up
Walk around your house and look for shingles or granules from your shingles. You should also look up to see if you notice any loose or missing shingles. Catching these issues early can save you money.
Finally, you should get a roof inspection by professionals annually.
Getting on a roof yourself is dangerous. You should try to do everything from the ground, and let the professionals go up on the roof.
