Besides looking at the overall cost, advantages and disadvantages of different roofing materials, you should also consider your local climate. Even the very best roofing materials can be rendered worthless in certain weather conditions. If you live in a warmer climate, there are some roofing materials you will be happier with in the long run.
Radiant Barriers and Overlays
If you want a roof that is efficient at bleeding off heat, opt for a roof with a foam spray, elastomeric sealant or ceramic-based paint. You might also want to look into built-up roofing (BUR), which is a technique used to apply cool-roof surface coatings over a roof made of either tar or asphalt.
Slate Tile
If you want a classic-looking roof that sheds off the hot rays of the summer sun, consider slate tile. This material has been around since the 17th century and is well known for its durability. Other great things about slate tile are that it requires very little in the way of maintenance, and it has a finish that only improves with time.
Clay and Terra Cotta
Depending on where you live, you might already be used to seeing homes with terra cotta or clay roofs. The reason this material is so popular in certain locations is that the lighter color does not absorb heat. A great thing about contemporary clay tiles is that they can be made to look more like expensive terra cotta or slate. Even better, you can also add reflective and weatherproofing properties to the tiles.
Concrete Tile
If slate and clay are a bit out of your price range and you still want a roof that keeps you cool, ask about concrete tile. What makes this material an ideal choice for warmer climates is that its thickness keeps it from heating up too quickly.
