Energy Efficient Roofing

In the last few years homeowners are starting to be more energy conscious. Solar panels on the roof are becoming more and more prevalent as well as more energy minded materials. There is a debate about using asphalt shingles versus concrete tile on your roof in regards to making your home more energy efficient. There are a few things to consider before making your decision. Also depending on where you live and the climate, what you think might be the best option might not be.

Asphalt shingles are effective if you do add a solar reflective shingle. The amount of heat that permeates through the roof to the attic is quite high, which is good if you are looking for a warmer home.

Concrete shingles are better and more effective in reducing the amount of heat transferred into the home through the roof. The tiles are elevated which helps to vent, allowing less heat in. They are also reflective in color which reduces the temperature.

From the basis of just energy efficiency, concrete tiles are the most effective rather than asphalt shingles.
